Dental Diet Discontinued

Friskies Dental Diet has been dropped by Purina. I emailed the manufacturer regarding why we the consumers were not informed of this discontinuation.

Here is their response:

“Thank you for contacting Nestlé Purina PetCare Company.

We appreciate your inquiry.  Due to the lack of consumer interest, please understand that Purina(r) Friskies(r) Dental Diet Poultry & Fish Flavors for Adult Cats has been discontinued. Once the product is gone from the shelves of your favorite store, it will no longer be available for purchase. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

While we do not offer a product similar in size and shape to Purina(r) Friskies(r) Dental Diet Poultry & Fish Flavors for Adult Cats, all of our dry cat foods contain crunchy kibbles which help reduce plaque build-up, whiten teeth and freshen breath.

If you have concerns regarding your cat’s dental health, we recommend contacting your veterinarian.

We are mailing a complimentary coupon and discount coupons for you to try one of our other Nestlé Purina PetCare Company products for your pet.  Please allow 7-10 business days for delivery.

Again, thank you for visiting our website.”

I did receive coupons but still my main issue was not answered, why are we the consumers were not notified before the product has been discontinued.  I asked a pet store if they get notifications from manufacturers of discontinued products and the answer was yes.  So why can’t stores post it on the shelf? No answer yet.

After researching I have found a comparable replacement, Hill’s Science Diet Oral Care.  It comes in 3.5lbs and 7lbs bags. I have started the weaning process from the Dental Diet to the Oral Care by mixing it with the remaining Dental Diet. The kibble is slightly bigger but does not seem to cause my cat an problems eating it and he likes it.

Reminder when switching food, mix increasing amounts of your cat’s new food with decreasing amounts of the old food over a 7-day period.
