Holidays & Your Cat

It’s time for the holiday season starting with Thanksgiving and ending with New Years. Is it okay to feed holiday table scraps to your cat? Yes, provided is just a little bit and the meat is not seasoned with anything hazardous to cats (see Hazards to your cat).  Only give the meat as a treat and feed your cat her regular food too.

Also, make sure all baking is kept out of your cat’s reach or restrict her from the kitchen while baking. The biggest baking hazard is yeast dough which can rise and cause gas to accumulate in your cat’s digestive system. This can be painful and can cause the stomach or intestines to rupture.

Note: If your cat is on a restricted diet for health reasons then try alternative treats to give instead of the table food.  Ask your veterinarian before giving your cat any treats.

Also, the holidays can be very stressful for your cat, with friends and family around. You may want to make a special place in a bedroom for your cat to stay with their food and water bowls and litter box while you have family and guests over .  This will keep her safe and not so stressed.
